B.O.B. Rationals

I enjoyed this unit as a whole; however, problems arose just like every unit.  It took me a few days to understand the difference between adding/subtracting or multiplying/dividing when simplifying.  I knew that when adding/subtracting, you want standard form in the numerator and factored form in the denominator.  Then, when multiplying/dividing I thought you had to go through the same process and when going through the problems incorrectly I got extremely confused.  After getting help I found that simplifying rationals was my favorite part of the rationals unit.

Unit 4 BOB

This unit had its ups and downs for me. I learned and understood some of the stuff Mr. Jackson taught, but at other times I barely got what he was saying. I believe part of this was due to me being sick, but some parts were also hard to comprehend. For the difficult items I slowly worked through the steps completing the problem and/or check with my reliable classmate, Dekett. 90% of the time he was able to explain what I was doing wrong, however for the other 10% I had to revert to the age old method of asking the teacher for help. With the knowledge and assistance of either or both of these people, I was able to complete and fully understand the work that was assigned. I hope that the logs and exponentials unit does not get too complicated and remains as an easily comprehendible unit.

BOB Rationals

The rational unit was very short, which was fine considering it took me a longer time understanding simplifying rationals than most other concepts. I understood graphing rational pretty well, although I didn't complete all the practice problems, because it took so long to just finish one. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rationals was my strongest suit in this unit. My muddiest point was simplifying rationals, but I also missed the lesson for that on Tuesday. Overall, it was a decent unit.

B.O.B. "Muddiest Point"

Dear Blogger Family,

 
            Unfortunately, in the Rational Functions Unit I did indeed encounter a “muddiest point.”  Although the graphing of rational functions seems easy, I struggled with it.  Especially early on in the unit, it was hard for me to differentiate between when a y-intercept would occur at (0,0) or not exist at all.  For example:

   2x^2 – 8x

----------------

x^2 – 7x + 12  

would have a y-intercept at (0,0)

while,

  x^2 – x – 6

-----------------

    x^2 + 3x   

 

would not have a y-intercept

This was just one aspect of graphing that defied my success in the Rational Unit.  At first, it was also difficult for me to remember how to identify the horizontal and vertical asymptotes.  However, I was able to improve on my graphing skill by working with my partner on the D.E.V. final project.  With my partner’s help, I have been able to expand on my knowledge of not only the Rational Unit but on all other previous units as well.  The problems that we created, especially the one regarding the graphing of rational functions, have helped me to better my proficiency in graphing and solving.  For that, I say thanks to my partner.

All in all, I enjoyed this unit because I learned several new concepts about rationals that I did not know before.

BoB#4- Rationals

To be honest, this unit was really a struggle for me. :) I felt like I understood the information and the concepts pretty well. I felt pretty confident about my test and my work. I think the only thing that kinda tripped me up was when we would solve rational equations- when we would make the denominator the same so we could solve the equation. For some reason that concept went fuzzy during the quiz and when I was just simplifying a rational I ended up forgetting to put the common denominator under it!...haha, wow. Other than that I think I'm doing good! Can't believe that in 3 weeks I'm out of this trimester...

B.O.B.- Muddiest Point

In this unit, I had difficulty doing some of the problems on the, “Get your Rational off my Rational Worksheet”.  I found it challenging to combine the like terms and to get the correct numerator.  For example in the problem:

((x+7)-(2x-7)/x-3)/ (10x-4)/(2x+3)

I had trouble simplifying the (x+7) - (2x-7).  For some reason, subtracting the -7 threw me off.  I did the problems on the worksheet several times and read over my notes and I finally figured things out.  I never imagined you could add, subtract, multiply and divide rational expressions, pretty cool!

B.O.B. Polynomials

I would have to say the polynomials unit has been my favorite unit of the whole trimester.  I actually really enjoyed graphing polynomials and finding the positive/negative degree of the equation.  Not only because I understood the concept, but because it was actually fun.  At the beginning, learning long division was very confusing to me.  When I came in to get help, it literally took Mr. Jackson 2 seconds to show me what I was doing wrong and how I could fix it.  I felt like a huge weight off my shoulders when I found out it wasn't so hard after all.  It was an amazing feeling when I got number 15 on the test all right with the 4 long division problems all in 1.  Overall I liked this unit.
